Plans are reusable subscription templates that bundle prices together. Instead of selecting individual prices each time you create a subscription, you select a plan and Gilbert sets everything up consistently.
Think of plans as "subscription recipes" — predefined configurations you can apply to new customers.
A plan defines:
The simplest plan includes one recurring price:
| Price | Type | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Starter Subscription — €9/month | Recurring | 1 |
Plans can bundle multiple prices together:
| Price | Type | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Team Subscription — €49/month | Recurring | 1 |
| Additional Users — €10/user/month | Recurring | 5 |
Mix recurring and one-time prices in the same plan:
| Price | Type | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Subscription — €99/month | Recurring | 1 |
| Onboarding Fee — €500 | One-time | 1 |
The one-time fee is charged on the first invoice only.
| Price | Type | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Pro Subscription — €29/month | Recurring | 1 |
| Default trial | 14 days |
The default trial is applied when creating subscriptions from this plan. During the trial, the subscription is active but no invoice is generated. Billing starts automatically when the trial ends.
| Aspect | Plans | Ad-hoc |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Standard offerings | Custom deals |
| Setup speed | Fast — select plan and go | Manual price selection |
| Consistency | Guaranteed same configuration | Varies per subscription |
| Plan changes | Upgrade/downgrade supported | Manual migration required |
Each price in a plan has a default quantity (minimum 1):
Quantities can be adjusted when creating a subscription from the plan.
One of the main benefits of plans is easy upgrades and downgrades.
Gilbert handles the transition automatically, including proration calculations.
When retiring a plan:
Archived plans cannot be used for new subscriptions, but existing subscriptions continue unchanged.
Use names that customers and your team understand:
| Good | Avoid |
|---|---|
| "Starter Monthly" | "Plan A" |
| "Pro Yearly" | "SKU-PRO-Y" |
| "Enterprise" | "Tier 3" |
If you offer monthly and yearly billing, create separate plans:
This makes plan changes straightforward and keeps pricing clear.
Each plan should represent one clear offering. Avoid overloading plans with too many optional add-ons — it's better to have focused plans that customers can easily compare.
